Welcome to the new Windsor Star (1)

Welcome to the new Windsor Star.

Today we launch new versions of our Star platforms, from print to online and smartphone.

These changes reflect detailed research on how, when and why you read us. As our audience has grown and changed the past 125 years, we have, too. We’re excited about unveiling big, new ideas.

The new print edition has been reorganized and redesigned with colour-coded sections to make them easier to navigate. Local news remains front and centre in the A section; you’ll recognize it under the blue News pillbox-square logo. The front section is augmented by regional news from our partners in Chatham, Sarnia and London, and our local opinion page, focusing on your issues and perspectives.

It’s a bigger, better local package because we know that’s what our readers — on any platform — want most.

Our arts and lifestyles section is indicated by an orange pillbox called You. Wherever you see that coloured square, you’ll find your favourite Star feature writers, such as Kelly Steele on fitness, Beatrice Fantoni on food and Dalson Chen on the arts.

The red square indicates all your Sports columnists and the latest news, from the Spits to the Wings and Leafs.

Our local business content will augment a daily file from the Financial Post, the nationally respected business publication.

But the biggest change you’ll notice today is a new section, part of a partnership with the National Post.

It’s a special national/world file created for Star readers, featuring the best journalists in the Postmedia network. The new “NP in the Windsor Star” section, compiled in consultation with senior Star editors, is a welcome addition to our daily offering, and will give readers a bigger and better window to the world.

Our print edition was redesigned by Postmedia design consultant Gayle Grin, with input from Mario Garcia, the world’s preeminent newspaper designer. The London-based design powerhouse Winkreative designed our bright new logo, which is an abstract representation of the river that defines our border with the United States.

Our website, windsorstar.com, has also undergone a refit. Powered as always by a responsive design that delivers an optimal viewing experience, regardless of which device or platform you use, the new site loads faster and possesses an improved search function.

Our tablet app has been rebranded and is updated throughout the day. The photos are brilliant; the text is enlargeable; and no recycling required.

Our redesigned Windsor Star smartphone app is free, and features a cool local news stream we call WS Now. Our mobile news team concentrates on storytelling in small bites for people who are on the move. It’s your news now, with a smart local sensibility and voice. Our app is also enabled for the Apple Watch, one of the first newsrooms in Canada to offer this to our readers.

We’ve launched these special local news apps in four other Postmedia markets — Ottawa, Calgary, Montreal and Edmonton — and they’ve not only proved popular, they’re reaching a whole new set of readers. Just one warning: the smartphone team has a sense of humour, and the site’s quite addictive.

For directions on how to access the smartphone app for your iOS or Android, go tohttp://windsorstar.com/subscription/smartphone-appor visit the iTunes App Store or Google Play and search“Windsor Star.” For those of you who already have our Windsor Star smartphone app, a simple update will do.

To download the e-paper for tablet or desktop, go to windsorstar.com/epaper (it’s included with a print home delivery subscription). Or you can subscribe to digital only at windsorstar.com/subscription.

The diagram above will give you more information about the new print edition.
